Mosharraf for maintaining sanctity of intellectual memorial

DHAKA, April 20, 2017 (BSS) - Minister for Housing and Public Works Engineer Mosharaf Hossain yesterday asked all concerned not to carry food items and water bottles to the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial at Rayer Bazar for maintaining its sanctity.

He made the directive to the authorities concerned while visiting the Martyred Intellectual Memorial here.

"Visitors will move around the memorial site and try to know about its history. But the left-outs of foods and water bottles make the memorial site look dirty," the minister observed.

The minister also directed to ensure beautification of the memorial by gardening there.

Chief Engineer of Public Works Directorate M Rafiqul Islam and others concerned officials were present.

In 1996, the minister said, the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had constructed the memorial in memory of the martyred intellectuals.

On December 14, 1971, two days before the country's independence, intellectuals were brutally killed at the Rayerbazar Baddyabumi, he said.

The public works ministry has been entrusted with the task of maintaining the memorial site.
