Tareque Zia is godfather of militant organization: Hanif

RAJSHAHI, Aug 13, 2017 (BSS)- Awami League Senior Joint General Secretary Mahabub-Ul-Alam Hanif yesterday termed Tareque Zia as the godfather of fundamentalist militant organization.

"Tareque Zia has no right to do politics in the country as he is a fugitive convicted," Hanif said while addressing an anti-terrorism and anti-militancy training and Dawati Mahfil at Rajshahi Medical College Auditorium in the city as the chief guest.

Divisional office of Islamic Foundation organized the programme to mark the National Mourning Day and 42nd Martyrdom anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Around 10,000 people including olama-mashaikh and imam from eight districts under the division attended the programme.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam, Awami League Organizing Secretary Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, MP, former mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, Akhter Jahan, MP, and acting commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Sarder Tamij Uddin also spoke.

With Deputy Commissioner Helal Mahmud Sharif in the chair, Chairman of Bangladesh Islami Oikya Jote Mijbahur Rahman Chowdhury and Director General of Islamic Foundation Shamim Muhammad Afzal were present at the meeting.

Hanif said BNP-Jamaat axis had introduced the politics of destruction and anarchy in the country during 2014-15. So, they have no way out but to seek apology from the people in general before returning to the constitutional politics.

He called upon the Islamic scholars and leaders to play their due roles so that none can harbour militancy and terrorism in the name of Islam.

He said the Islamic scholars should engage themselves in anti-militancy and anti-fundamentalism campaign. They should take the responsibility of preventing the people who are misleading the public in general in the name of religion.

The religious leaders and imams have their roles in uprooting crime as it is defaming Islam alongside destroying the image of Muslim Ummah across the world, he added.

In his remarks, Shahriar Alam said: "Those who are killing people and carrying out terrorist acts in the name of religion are not on the right path. In no way does Islam support murders."

The imams have a vital role to play for forging social resistance against extremism. He said the religious leaders should come forward to protect the country's hard-earned democracy as a certain circle has been hatching deep-rooted conspiracy against democracy.
