Dhaka North City Corporation by-polls on Feb 26

DHAKA, Jan 4, 2018 (BSS) - The by-election to Dhaka North City Corporation for the mayoral post will be held on February 26.

The announcement came at a meeting of the Election Commission (EC) with its Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda in the chair at the EC Bhaban in city's Agargaon today. The mayoral post fell vacant after the demise of Annisul Huq on November 30 last year. On December 1, the Local Government Division declared the post as vacant. After the meeting, EC Acting Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed said the schedule of the by-election will be declared on January 9 (Tuesday).

The voting will be held in 36 new wards including in DNCC and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) on the same day, he said.

Ahmed said the polls schedule of 36 new wards and reserved seats will be announced on January 9. Ahmed said the EC is yet to take decision whether the Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) to be used instead of ballot paper in the polls.

The aspirants of the election, he said, will have to remove their displayed posters and banners by January 6 midnight, otherwise they will face legal action.

The commission has already issued directive for the authority concerned in this end, he added.

Besides, the meeting also decided to hold the by-elections to Gaibandha-1 and Brahamanbaria-1 constituencies on March 13 while the schedule of the two by-elections will be announced on February 5, Ahmed added.

Awami League Lawmaker Golam Mostafa of Gaibandha-1 constituency died after a road accident on December 19 and Sayedul Haque of Brahamanbaria-1 died at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University on December 16.
