Hasan urges BNP to join JS polls to uphold constitution

DHAKA, Jan 9, 2018 (BSS) - Awami League Publicity and Publication Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud today called upon BNP to take part in the next Jatiya Sangsad (JS) election under the incumbent government to uphold the constitution.

He made the call at a discussion of Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote marking the Homecoming Day of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhaka Reporters' Unity (DRU) auditorium here.

Hasan, also a spokesperson of Awami League (AL), said the next parliament election would be held under the Election Commission likewise other parliamentary democratic countries in the world.

After announcement of schedule for JS election, everything relating to polls will go under the Election Commission so a government will perform only routine works during the election as per the constitution, he added.

Hasan said, during the election period, government cannot take any policymaking decision.

Welcoming BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia's announcement of taking part in the next election, the AL spokesperson said this announcement proves that the party made a mistake by not taking part in the previous one.

Hasan urged BNP not to carry out any violent activities what they did centering the previous election.

About the homecoming of Bangabandhu, the AL spokesman said the nation's expectations were fulfilled and the people got the real taste of victory with the homecoming of Bangabandhu on January 10, 1972.

Chaired by Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote Vice-President Abdul Matin Bhuiyan, the discussion was addressed by Justice Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik, Dhaka City South unit of AL general secretary Shahe Alam Murad and Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote General Secretary Falguni Hamid, among others.
