Khaleda not shown arrested in any other case: Asaduzzaman

DHAKA, Feb 14, 2018 (BSS) - Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan yesterday said BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has not been shown arrested in any other case except the Zia Orphanage Trust Corruption case.

"Khaleda Zia is in jail after being convicted in the Zia Orphanage Trust Corruption case. She has not been shown arrested in any other case," he said while replying a query from journalists at his Secretariat office here.

"The remarks of the BNP leaders to this end are completely false and misleading as nothing happened in regards to showing Khaleda Zia arrested in other cases," he said.

"There are production warrants against Khaleda Zia in Barapukuria Coal Mine case and Gatco case. But she is on bail in both the cases. There is no need to show her arrested in the cases, if she appears before the court regularly, " he added.

The minister said, "The next hearing of the cases will be held on February 18 and March 4 respectively and her (Khaleda Zia's) appearance before the court in this regard will depend on the court and the jail authorities."

"Khaleda Zia has been given all the facilities in the jail in accordance with the jail code considering her social status as she is the chairperson of a big political party like BNP and a former two-time premier," he also said.

"She (Khaleda Zia) has been kept at the old Dhaka Central Jail considering her health condition as Kashimpur Jail is far away from Dhaka," he opined.

Earlier on February 8, a Dhaka court sentenced Khaleda Zia to five-year imprisonment and five others, including her elder son Tarique Rahman, to 10-year imprisonment each in the Zia Orphanage Trust Corruption case.

In replying to another query, the minister said, "The masterminds behind the leaking of question papers will soon be arrested. The people who have been arrested are somehow involved in the process of question paper leakage."
