DHAKA, Jan 4, 2017 (BSS) - A daylong workshop on 'Draft Strategic Plan for Higher Education in Bangladesh 2017-2026' (DSPHEB) was held at University Grants Commission (UGC) auditorium in the city today.
The Strategic Policy Unit under Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP) of UGC organized the workshop with UGC Chairman Professor Abdul Mannan in the chair, a UGC release said.
Additional Secretary of Education Ministry Mohiuddin Khan and Senior Operations Officer of World Bank Dr. Mokhlesur Rahman addressed the function, among others.
The Project Director of HEQEP Dr Gauranga Chandra Mohanta, ndc delivered the welcome speech at the function, the release added.
UGC member Professor Dr. Mohammad Yousuf Ali Mollah presided over the technical session of the workshop while Professor Dr. Syed Manzoorul Islam presented a draft report on "Strategic Plan for Higher Education in Bangladesh 2017-2026".
Earlier, the ministry of education formed a six-member expert committee to formulate strategic plan for tertiary education and research in universities of Bangladesh.
Appraising the draft report, UGC Chairman Professor Mannan said the report on strategic plan for public and private universities will play an important role for enhancing the quality of higher education and research in the country.
He also lauded the government's initiative of forming expert committee and thanked the committee members for extending their cooperation and support in formulating recommendations.
The report presented by Professor Manzoorul Islam highlighted on redefining higher education, upgrading UGC into Higher Education Commission (HEC), increasing GDP from 0.65 percent to 1 percent by the end of 2018, establishing university-industry linkage, bringing the university laws under single umbrella legislation etc.
UGC members Professor Dr Dil Afroza Begum and Professor Dr Md Akhtar Hossain, Additional Secretary of Education Ministry Md. Helal Uddin, Conveners of the six-member Expert Committees, Vice-Chancellors, Pro-Vice-Chancellors and Senior Professors from public and private universities were joined the function, among others, it said.
