Book fair abuzz with visitors first day of 'Basanta'

DHAKA, Feb 13, 2018 (BSS) - A large number of visitors of all ages particularly youths were seen today on the 13th day of the Amar Ekushey Granthamela coinciding with the Pahela Falgun.

Pahela Falgun, the first day of Spring in the Bengali month of Falgun, is being celebrated across the country today in a colourful manner with young girls and boys joining various functions wearing dazzling dresses.

Falgun is the eleventh month in the Bengali calendar and the first month of the season, Spring, the king of all the six seasons that brings back warm sunshine, budding flowers and dancing of birds.

The first day of Falgun is known as Pahela Falgun and usually falls on February 13 of the Gregorian calendar.

After the dryness of winter, new leaves start to come out again and the nature adorns the branches with new colorful flowers such as shimul, polash and marigold.

Clad in yellow, orange and other bright colours that symbolise the Bangla season Bashanto (Spring), the people are in line for welcoming the season with a myriad of flowers, poems, songs and dances.

The stall attendants were seen busy dealing with the visitors and smiles flashed on the face of the publishers as the first day of Falgun crowd flocked to different stalls and pavilions.

According to the Bangla Academy, a total of 150 new books of different genres of literature and branches of knowledge were published today.

The organizers of the fair arranged different programmes including, discussion and cultural function.

The month-long book fair began on February 1 on the premises of Bangla Academy and its adjoining Suhrawardy Udyan in the city.

Writers, booklovers and publishers observed that the Amar Ekushey Book Fair has now become a festival of all ages of people. This is a great success of the book fair.

The book fair will remain open for all from 3pm to 9pm on working days and 11am to 9pm on government holidays with a one-hour break for lunch and offering prayers. It will continue till February 28.

A total of 800 stalls including 670 book stalls, 150 stalls of little magazines and some stalls of different socio-cultural organizations have been installed in the book fair covering an area of 1.50 lakh square feet. Bangla Academy will publish 146 new books this year.
