DHAKA, Jan 10, 2018 (BSS) - Severe cold wave swept over northwestern Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions and western Gopalgonj, Jessore and Kushtia and southwestern Satkhira has stifled into a mild to moderate cold wave as the mercury level has increased by 1-4 degree celsius across the country today.
"Mild to moderate cold wave is sweeping throughout the country as the overall temperature of the country has increased by 1-4 degree celsius. But a severe cold wave is sweeping through Jessore and Kushtia regions," Md Shahinul Islam, a meteorologist at Bangladesh Meteorology Department (BMD), told BSS today.
The mercury level is likely to decrease slightly on January 16 and 17 exposing the country to "mild to moderate cold wave" for the second time in current season, he said.
Met office forecast today said mild to moderate cold wave is sweeping over Rajshahi, Rangpur, Barisal, Mymensingh divisions, remaining part of Khulna division and the regions of Faridpur, Madaripur, Tangail, Srimangal, Sitakundu, Comilla and Feni.
The current cold wave condition is likely to continue as mild to moderate cold wave over the country for some more days, the forecast added.
"Ridge of sub-continental high extends up to western part of Bangladesh. The low over Southeast Bay and adjoining area now lies as a trough of low over Southwest Bay of Bengal off Srilanka and Tamil Nadu coast," it said.
Moderate to thick fog may occur at places over the country during mid night till tomorrow morning but it may continue till noon over northwestern part of the country while weather may remain dry with temporary partly cloudy sky over the country.
Night and day temperature may rise slightly over the country.
Minimum temperature of the country was recorded today at 5.5 degree celsius at Chuadanga in Khulna division and maximum temperature at 27.0 degrees celsius on Tuesday at Teknaf in Chittagong division.
The sun sets at 5:29 pm today and rises at 6:44 am tomorrow in Dhaka.
