DHAKA, Mar 19, 2018 (BSS) - Rupa (not real name), a15-year-old girl with intellectual disability, went to the field to cut grass a few days ago. But she was raped in the field. Later, one of her relatives called 999, the national emergency number, seeking help for the girl and actions against the culprit.
After one hour of the call, police reached the place of occurrence in a remote area and arrested the alleged rapist, a middle-aged man. It happened at Boyarmari Char in Godagari upazila of Rajshahi district.
The alleged rapist was identified as Amzad Ali, an inhabitant of Baouspur village of the same upzaila. He used to live with his daughter's family at Boyarmari Char area.
Locals alleged that Amzad raped Rupa taking the advantage of her mental retardation. Brother of the victim lodged a case after police arrested Amzad.
Inspector (investigation) of Godagari police station Altaf Hossain said the adolescent girl was going to the field to cut grass. But the aged man raped her. Later, locals rescued the mentally disabled girl hearing her screams. They tried to resolve the matter locally, but the family of the girl didn't agree and informed police.
Police were informed through the toll-free national emergency number, 999, about the incident one day later. Police headquarters passed the information to Godagari police station. After getting information, police went to the girl's house and talked to her.
Being confirmed about the incident, police raided the house of Amzad Ali and arrested him.
Investigating officer of the case Sub-Inspector Abu Bakar Siddique said the girl was sent to 'One Stop Crisis Center' of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for test. And the alleged rapist was sent to jail through the court.
Rajshahi Police Super Moazzem Hossain said they told about the national emergency service, 999, at many local meetings to encourage the people to avail of this service.
Police earlier rendered some services through the emergency number. But it was the first incident of arresting an alleged rapist after getting a phone call from a remote char area.
The Department of Information and Communication Technology has made the infrastructure of the national emergency service 999. The service started on experimental basis between October 1, 2016 and June 30, 2017.
Later, the service went on full operation from December 12 last year (2017).
Anyone can inform his/her problem by dialing 999 at the ICT (information communication technology) desk of the police headquarters and the mobile phones need not any balance to call this toll-free number.
