RANGPUR, Jan 2, 2017 (BSS) - Leader of an organised gang of dacoits was killed in a gunfight with police at Bheluar Bridge area under Mithapukur upazila here in the small hours of today, police sources said.

"The deceased was identified as Rahat, 32, son of late Shahidullah of village Buzruk Santoshpur under the same upazila.

Earlier, Mithapukur Thana police arrested absconding dacoit Rahat from his village and took him to Bheluar Bride area at around 2 am for recovering illegal arms as per his confession.

"However, some other members of the dacoits' gang opened gunfire there forcing police to retaliate in self-defense when Rahat was critically injured," Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mithapukur Thana Humayun Kabir told BSS adding that two police members were also injured during the gunfight.

Police seized one shooter gun with four rounds of live bullets from the spot, rescued critically injured dacoit Rahat and rushed him to Mithapukur Upazila Health Complex (MUHC).

As his condition deteriorated, Rahat was shifted from MUHC to Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH) where the attending doctor declared him dead.

"Ten criminal cases, including three in connections with committing robbery with murders and killing of ASI Abdur Rahim of Mithapukur Thana in 2012, were pending against Rahat with Mithapukur Thana alone," the OC added.

The body was sent to the RMCH morgue for conducting autopsy.

The process of filing two separate cases in these connections with Mithapukur Thana was progressing till filing of this report at 2:15 pm, police said.
