UZPs vital means for attaining SDGs

RAJSHAHI, Jan 4, 2017 (BSS)- Transforming the Upazila Parishads (UZPs) into more strengthened, effective and service-friendly institutions has become an urgent need for attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

All members of field administration and UZPs people should come forward and work together for making all activities and planning of UZPs coordinated with SDGs properly.

The observation came in a daylong divisional level orientation on 'SDGs- 2030' held at Shilpakala Academy Auditorium here today.

Upazila Governance Project (UZGP) of Local Government Division (LGD) organized the orientation in association with Commissioner Office of Rajshahi division discussing ways and means of how to attain the SDGs through transforming the UZGPs into good governed entity.

Commissioner of Rajshahi division Abdul Hannan addressed the programme as chief guest with Shyam Kishore Roy, Director of Local Government Divisional, in the chair.

Additional Commissioners Munir Hossain and Aminul Islam and Deputy Commissioner Kazi Ashraf Uddin spoke as special guests.

During his keynote presentation, Rafiqul Islam, Divisional Facilitator of UZGP, gave an overview of 17 SDGs and 169 targets and possible ways of attaining those effectively.

Chief Guest Abdul Hannan says there is no alternative to make UZP effective and stronger local government institutions which will ultimately help democracy flourish in the country.

"The Upazilas have the potential of being the real hub for service delivery to the people", said Abdul Hannan.

Some 242 field level administrative officials and elected public representatives including all Upazila Nirbahi Officers and Upazila Chairmen and Vice-chairmen both males and females from 58 upazilas in seven districts under Rajshahi division joined the orientation.

Taking part in open discussion, the participants put forward a set of recommendations on how to identify priorities and next course of action for SDG-friendly UZP policy formulation.

Uniform development and justice could be ensured through empowering the UZPs and building their capacities in preparing policies, strategies, work-plans and allocating funds.
