RANGPUR, Jan 5, 2017 (BSS) - The local government institutions (LGIs) should play vital roles to achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs) through involving common people with the implementation process.
The opinion came at the concluding ceremony of an orientation workshop organised by Sadar upazila parisahd at its auditorium here on 'Sustainable Development Goals' under the Upazila Governance Project (UZGP) this afternoon.
Heads of different upazila level government departments and offices, union parisahd chairmen and members, heads of different educational institutions and local journalists participated in the workshop.
Sadar upazila parisahd Chairman Nasima Zaman Boby attended the workshop as the chief guest with Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Ziaur Rahman in the chair.
Sadar upazila Vice-chairman Shahinur Rahman Shaon, Upazila Land Officer Faizul Kabir, Chandanpat union Chairman Aminur Rahman and Saddyapuskorini union Chairman Sohel Rana addressed as special guests.
District Facilitator of the UZGP Jahangir Alam gave a power-point presentation narrating concepts of the 17 goals and 169 targets of the SDGs and localisation of the implementation process to achieve those by 2030.
He also facilitated group works on preparing and adoption of planning and formulation of budgets as per local demand to implement those by the union parishads to attain the set goals and targets of the SDGs.
In her speech, the chief guest highly lauded the tremendous successes already attained by the government through achieving the millennium development goals by 2015 in raising the status of the country to the lower middle income nation.
In his concluding speech, the UNO called upon the public representatives in the LGIs to set up a glaring example in achieving the SDGs timely through involving the common people.
