AL gives importance to agri research, PM

SANGSAD BHABAN, Sept 13, 2017 (BSS)-Prime Minister and Leader of the House Sheikh Hasina today said country's food production had significantly risen for revitalizing the agriculture research programme through allocating Taka 12 crore for the first time in 1996.

"We have given importance to research and Taka 12 crore was earmarked for the first time for the agricultural research after coming to power in 1996," she said while responding to a supplementary from treasury bench lawmaker Sanjida Khanam in the House during her question-answer session.

She said her government for the first time had given financial allocation for the agricultural research as boosting food production was its priority for fulfilling the increasing demand for food.

Therefore, she said, the country is now witnessing a tremendous success in case of innovating flood-tolerant and drought-tolerant rice varieties.

Sheikh Hasina said the country has also invented the salinity-tolerant rice variety, while an extensive research is underway in this regard.

For jute research, she said, Bangladesh has already achieved success in decoding genome sequence of jute, adding that the jute research institute has been modernized with modern equipment for conducting extensive research on jute crop.

Terming the agriculture as the main driving force, the premier said new technology and modern agriculture management system could bring a revolutionary change in the production process.

Apart from the agriculture, the government has also given importance to the industrialization, she said.
