220 multipurpose cyclone shelters under construction: Maya

SANGSAD BHABAN, Feb 13, 2018 (BSS) - Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, Bir Bikram, today said the construction works of 220 multipurpose cyclone shelters have been going on under second phase in 2016-2019 duration.

"Some 100 multipurpose cyclone shelters have already been constructed under "Coastal and Cyclone Prone Area Multipurpose Cyclone Shelter Construction Project" in first phase during 2013-2015," he said this, while replying to a starred question from treasury bench Sheikh M Nurul Haque of Khulna-6 in the Jatiya Sangsad.

Replying to another question from treasury bench member Begum Sanjida Khanam, the minister said that currently a total of 2,487 cyclone shelters are in the country, adding, "More 2,097 multipurpose cyclone shelters are required in future, of which the ministry is constructing 752 multipurpose cyclone shelters in the country."

He informed the House that a committee was formed after cyclone Sidr in 2007 which recommended for constructing 2,097 multipurpose cyclone shelters in the coastal areas.
