JASHORE, Dec 13, 2023 (BSS) - Onion cultivation in the district has exceeded
targets set up by the govt.
Farmers in the district have cultivated onions on maximum amount of lands to
boost its production and get benefited for onion's demand in local markets.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said onions had been
cultivated on 1200 hectors of land in 8 upazilas of the district last year.
The government has set a target of 1500 hectors of land for onion cultivation
for the current season in the district. But onion have been cultivated on
more than 1500 hectors of land this season.
N-53 summer variety has been cultivated on 300 hectors of land. Seeds and
fertilizers were distributed among 2500 farmers as incentive to boost onion
production in the district. As farmers in the district have started
harvesting red onion, onion prices have started to come down at local
markets.
High yield of summer onions came in Chowgacha, Jhikargacha and Sadar Upazila.
Winter onion is being cultivated in Monirampur Upazila mostly.
Farmer Golam Mostofa of Hazrakhana village in Chowgacha Upazila cultivated
onion on Two bighas of land this season. He has started harvesting and
getting high yield. He hoped he would get 120 mounds of onion from the land.
He had to spend Tk 60000 for the two bigha of land.
Onion trader Kamal Hossain from Jashore Kalibari said newly harvested onion
is appearing in the market and Muricata onion is being sold at Tk 70 to 80
per kg.

Dr Susanta Kumar Tarofder said incentive programmes have been launched to
boost onion production and attract farmers towards onion cultivation.
