JAMALPUR, March 18, 2024 (BSS) – Farmers in the district got surplus production of mustard this year compared to last year.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) office, farmers got 56,808 tonnes of mustard which is 13,582 tonnes more than last year's production.
This year, farmers cultivated mustard on 41,165 hectares of land against the previous year cultivation of 32,500 hectares.
The DAE sources said 10,489 tonnes mustard produced from 7,950 hectares of land in Jamalpur sadar upazila while 7,478 tonnes produced from 5,380 hectares of land in Sarishabari, 9,756 tonnes from 6,150 hectares of land in Melandah, 8,934 tonnes from 6,150 hectares of land in Islampur, 5,684 tonnes from 4,165 hectares of land in Dewanganj, 5,005 tonnes from 3,850 hectares of land in Madarganj and 9,462 tonnes mustard produced from 7,520 hectares of land in Bakshiganj upazilas.
The office said farmers cultivated nine varieties of mustard this year. The varieties are BARI-9, BARI-14, BARI-15, BARI-17, BARI-18, BINA-4, BINA-9, Tori-7 and BADC-1.
Deputy Director of the DAE Zakia Sultana said favourable weather, incentive programme, cultivation of short-duration variety mustard and motivational work of the agriculture department have drifted farmers to bring more land under mustard cultivation this year.
Aiming to increase mustard production, the Agriculture Department also disbursed incentive among 54,600 small and marginal farmers in the district, she added.
