NARAIL , July 4, 2024 (BSS) - Farmers are expecting a bumper production of jute during this season as harvesting of the fibre crop will begin soon in all three upazilas of the district.
Department of Agriculture Extention (DAE) sources said , farmers are now taking preparations for harvesting and rotting of jute plants in water bodies and also adopting latest ribbon-retting technology to ensure better quality of the fibre for high price.
Deputy Director of DAE for Narail district Md Ashek Parvez said a target of producing 3 lakh bales of jute was cultivated from 23,430 hectares of land in three upazilas of the district this season.
Farmers have cultivated jute on 12,165 hectares of land in Lohagora upazila, 6,865 hectares in Narail sadar upazila and 4,400 hectares in Kalia upazila of the district.
The DAE, Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation, other agriculture related departments and organizations extended necessary assistance to farmers to make the jute intensive farming programme a success.
"The government also provided high yielding varieties of quality jute seeds, training and inputs to farmers to enable them in expanding farming to increase production of jute for reviving past glory of the fibre crop," DD Parvez said."Declaration of jute as a national agricultural product along with mandatory use of jute sacs in different sectors continues increasing demand for the fibre ensuring its fair price," he added.
Farmers Ibrahim Sheikh, Aroj Ali Fakir, Mosaref Hossain and Younus Sheikh of different villages in Narail said they are preparing to start harvesting their cultivated jute crop from the last week of this month and hoping to get an excellent output.
