DHAKA, Dec 9, 2024 (BSS) -Agriculture Advisor Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.) today asked all concerned to make sure that the farmers would not be deprived in anyway as the real development of the country would only happen with the development of farmers.

"Everyone should pay attention on how the farmers will develop. No one will be exempted if they are deprived," he said.

He made the remarks while exchanging view with the agriculture officials of the Khulna region at Khulna regional office of the Department of Agricultural Extension in Daulatpur, Khulna metropolis this afternoon.

The advisor said that the number of doctoral degree holders in the agriculture department is high, which means they are more educated.

"This should be utilized in the interest of the farmers. Without doing that and without going to the farmers, it is not permissible to sit in the AC room of the office," he said.

 He said that it is not enough to just accept the project, but rather to verify how necessary it is in the interest of the people.

 Jahangir also said agricultural incentives are a breeding ground for corruption, adding, "Either 100 percent transparency should be ensured in its distribution, or it should be stopped."

The advisor requested the officers present to work in associations or societies for the welfare of the members, ignoring personal interests.

In the exchange of views, the advisor was informed about the problems, possibilities and development of agriculture in the Khulna region.

Speaking on the occasion, the agriculture officials said the main problem of agriculture in the Khulna region is water logging.
 
"If this problem is eliminated, lakhs of hectares of land can be brought under cultivation in this region. To eliminate water logging in this region, 640 canals of 500 km in length need to be dug," they said.

Concerned officials were present during the view-exchange.
