NETROKONA, Jan 19, 2025 (BSS) - The prices of vegetables saw a fresh decline
in the markets under six upazilas of the district, bringing some sort of
relief to the people of the haor areas.
The kitchen markets are full of winter vegetables. A large number of
vegetables including potatoes, gourds, brinjal, beans, radish, cauliflower
and cabbage are available in the markets and prices have also come down.
Therefore, relief has returned to the people of the haor areas.
Since the supply of vegetables is much more than the demand, the prices of
all types of vegetables have also declined in the markets.
Currently, potatoes are being sold at different markets in the haor areas at
Taka 30 per kilogram (Kg), beans at Taka 15 to 20 per kg, brinjal at Taka 20
to 30 per kg, gourds at Taka 20 to 30 per piece, sweet gourds at Taka 40 to
50 per kg, papaya at Taka 20 to 25 per kg, cauliflower at Taka 10 per kg,
cabbage at Taka 10 per kg, radishes at Taka 10 per hali (four pieces).
The price of each vegetable has decreased by Taka 10 to Taka 15 per kg in the
last one week.
Babul Mia, a resident of Changaon village and also a buyer of the vegetable
market in Madan upazila of the district, said, "The market is now full of
vegetables in our area. There is no shortage of vegetables. The prices of
every vegetable have come down."
Sabuj Mia, a resident of the area, said, "A large amount of vegetables are
produced in our area.
These vegetables are now coming to the market. That is
why the prices have come down a lot."
Farmer Mojibur Rahman of Jagannathpur area underKhaliajuri upazila said,
"This time I have cultivated potatoes, gourds, radishes and cauliflower.
At the beginning of winter, the price rate was good but now it has completely
decreased. The profit will not be as much as I expected."
Anis Mia, a trader of Mohanganj upazila of the district, said that sufficient
quantities of local vegetables are coming to the market and price of those is
decreasing day by day.
However, the prices of vegetables may increase at the end of the winter
season.
According to the District Agricultural Extension (DAE) Department, this year
vegetables have been cultivated on a total of 7,725 hectares of land in 10
upazilas of the district.
Of the total, 4,145 hectares of land were brought under vegetable cultivation
in the upazilas of the haor area alone. Among these, vegetables have been
cultivated on 800 hectares of land in Madan upazila, 605 hectares in
Khaliajuri, 425 hectares in Mohanganj, 460 hectares in Atpara, 645 hectares
in Barhatta and 1,210 hectares in Kalmakanda upazilas.
In addition, vegetables have been cultivated on a total of 3,580 hectares of
land in the other four upazilas of the district.
