Boro harvest reaches its peak in Sunamganj haors

SUNAMGANJ, April 27, 2025 (BSS) - As the harvesting of Boro paddy is going on in full swing, farmers are busy harvesting and threshing the crop across 137 haors in 12 upazilas of the district.

Farmers are able to harvest paddy swiftly due to the availability of combined harvesters, reaper machines apart from workers.

About 172,350 workers are currently engaged in paddy harvesting. Of them, 166,983 are local workers, while 5,367 workers have come from neighbouring districts.

In addition, farmers are harvesting paddy with 1,242 harvesting machines round the clock. Of these agri-tools, 908 are combined harvesters and 116 are reaper machines.

Rumon Chowdhury, a farmer from Chaptir Haor, told BSS that Boro paddy harvesting is going on in full swing in their locality.

"I have cultivated Boro on 150 bighas of land. I have already harvested 75 percent of the paddy till Sunday," he said.

He said the combine harvester is a revolutionary machine, as it not only harvests paddy but also threshes the food grain, making the entire process smoother.

"I am expecting to get 3,000 maunds of paddy from my fields," he said.
Anasur Rahman, a farmer from Dhal Chanpur village on the banks of Baram Haor, one of the largest haors in Dirai upazila, told BSS that he has cultivated Boro paddy on 52 bighas of land and has harvested 75 percent of the paddy by Sunday.

He expects to complete harvesting within the next two to three days.

Farmer Siraj Mia of Chabbisha village in Shalla upazila said he has cultivated Boro paddy on 20 bighas of land. He got 25 maunds of paddy per bigha.

Selim Akhanji of Gobindashree village in Tahirpur upazila told BSS, "I cultivated Boro on 36 bighas of land in Shanir Haor, and I am expecting to get at least 500 maunds of paddy from my land."

Sources at the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) office said Boro paddy has been cultivated on 22,03,502 hectares of land in 137 haors of 12 upazilas of the district, with a production target of 13,96,080 metric tonnes of paddy.

Acting Deputy Director of the DAE, Mustafa Iqbal Azad, said about 76 percent of Boro paddy harvesting has been completed in the haors and 24 percent in the plain lands till Sunday.

Boro paddy harvesting will be completed within the next seven days in the haors, and paddy harvesting in the plain lands will be completed by May 25.
