Farmers enthuse more on vegetable cultivation in Narsingdi chars

NARSINGDI, July 11, 2021 (BSS) – Farmers are being more interested in the cultivation of vegetables specially Robi crops like potato, sweet potato, chilly, pulse, mustard, onion, garlic, sweet gourd, cucumber, coriander, kawn, sesame and tishi.

Abu Taleb, a  farmer of char Alokbali in Narsingdi Sadar upazila said he has cultivated the sweet potato on eight bighas of land last season by spending around Taka 3800. He earned Taka over 25,000 by selling his produce.

Another farmer Abdur Rahim, of Mirjarchar area in Raipura upazila said he has cultivated chilly on five bighas of land this season by spending around Taka 3500. He is hopeful of earning around Taka 25,000 by selling his produce.

He said low production cost and easy cultivation process made growers interested in vegetable cultivation.

He also said sandy char land is very suitable for the cultivation of robi crop.

A farmer can produce 50 to 60 maunds sweet potato on one bigha of land and per maund sweet potato can be sold between Tk 500 to 550, he added.

Rahim said its cultivation cost is also very low as it needs less fertilizers and irrigation.

Shovan Kumar Dhar, Deputy Director of DAE, told BSS that the sandy char lands and the river beds are suitable for the cultivation of sweet potato, potato, chilly, mustard, onion and other Robi crops.
