KHULNA, Nov 7, 2022 (BSS) - Farmers of Khulna region are now busy in cultivating 40 varieties of winter vegetables.
Farmers in the region including coastal areas have successfully completed preparing their seedbeds after the recent cyclone 'Sitrang.'
Farmers are cultivating 40 varieties of winter vegetables in the region like cauliflower, cabbage, radish, carrot, beet, turnip, tomato, leafy spinach, red spinach and very popular vegetables 'Dabry' and 'Koloi'Shak.
The growers are working in the vegetable fields from morning till evening as they avail the scopes of recouping the losses caused by the cyclone 'Sitrang', draught and Covid-19 pandemic situation.
They are expecting to get fair prices for their production from both retail and wholesale markets.
Officials of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said around 7.56 lakh tonnes of winter vegetables are expected to be produced from 28,050 hectares of land in all four districts in Khulna region during the current season.
Farmers have already cultivated vegetables on 9,269 hectares of land, 33 percent of total cultivation until Monday.
Talking to BSS, Hafizur Rahman, additional director of Khulna Agriculture region (in-charge) said, seedbeds of Khulna, Bagerhat, Satkhira and Narail of the region has been damaged caused by cyclone Sitrang.
In Khulna, winter vegetables have been cultivated on 2,260 hectares of land out of 8,350 hectares.
Farmers of Bagerhat have cultivated vegetables on 3,650 hectares of land out of 8,350 hectares. Farmers of Satkhira have cultivated vegetables on 3,009 hectares of land out of 9,500 hectares and Narail farmers have cultivated vegetables on 350 hectares of land out of 3,000 hectares.
Abdul Zalil Molla, a resident of Gutudia village under Dumuria upazila, has developed himself as a potential vegetable farmer in the region. He has cultivated cabbage on three bighas of land, papaya on one bigha and brinjal on two bighas of land and he is expecting a good profit this year.
