Export earnings in January posts 11.45% growth

DHAKA, Feb 4, 2024 (BSS) - Country's export earnings in January witnessed a healthy growth of 11.45 percent fetching $5,724.34 million where the major export-oriented RMG sector bagged nearly $5 billion.

According to the latest statistics of the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), the export target for January 2024 was $5,764 million while the export performance for January 2023 was $5,136.24 million.

The EPB figures revealed that during the July-January period of the current fiscal year (FY24), the overall export earnings totaled $33,264.71 million having a growth of 2.52 percent.

During the mentioned period, the RMG export grew by 3.45 percent year-over-year basis to $28.36 billion from $27.41 billion during the same period of the previous fiscal year (2022-23).

The export of knitwear was $16.17 billion with a growth of 8.15 percent while woven garments bagged $12.18 billion having a fall of 2.20 percent.

The single-month apparel export earnings that indicate export in January 2024 was $4.97 billion having a growth of 12.45 percent compared to January 2023.

Talking to BSS, Mohiuddin Rubel, Director, BGMEA and additional managing director, Denim Expert Ltd, said that the overall growth in RMG export is not up to the mark and not bad also.

"For Bangladesh, the positive side is that we are being able to gradually diversify our products and moving toward sophisticated items, which is reflected in the growth. After 3 months, the growth has inclined, and this is the first time in a single month that our RMG exports have reached near about $5 billion," he added.

Out of the major exportable items during this July-January period, primary commodities totaled $830.13 million, agriculture products $572.72 million, manufactured commodities $32,434.58 million, plastic products $141.39 million, leather and leather products $628.06 million, jute and jute goods $510.54 million, home textile $454.74 million, footwear $296.24 million.
