Govt cuts duties to reduce prices of essentials: Titu

DHAKA, Feb 08, 2024 (BSS) - State Minister for Commerce Ahsanul Islam Titu today said the government has reduced the duties on rice, sugar, dates and edible oil to boost supply and contain prices of the essentials during the holy month of Ramadan to begin in the middle of March.

"Import duty on edible oil has been reduced from 15 percent to 10 percent while on dates from 25 percent to 15 percent," he said speaking with journalists at his secretariat office in the city, said a press release.

Mentioning that the import duty of sugar has been reduced, Titu said, the import duty on unrefined sugar has been reduced to Taka 1000 per ton.

Some 25 percent customs duty for rice import has been removed and regulatory duty slashed to 5 percent from 25 percent, he added.
