DHAKA, April 18, 2024 (BSS) - Speakers at a discussion here today laid emphasis on taking immediate preparations and necessary actions to sustain the country's ship recycling industry.
They mentioned that if the Treatment Storage and Disposal Facility (TSDF) in all yards are not compliant as per the Hong Kong Convention by 2025, no new ship breaking approval for ship recycling will be obtained from the Ministry of Industry.
They made the observation at the discussion on ensuring speedy compliance with the Hong Kong Convention 2009 in Bangladesh's ship recycling industry.
Senior Secretary of the Industries Ministry Zakia Sultana, Bangladesh High Commissioner to the United Kingdom (UK) Saida Muna Tasneem, Additional Secretary of the Industries Ministry Shamimul Haque and Project Director of IMO-Norway sensrec Project Phase III Sanjay Kumar Ghosh, among others, spoke on the occasion.
In the discussion, the speakers also opined that Bangladesh is one of the leading ship recycling countries in the world.
The Hong Kong International Convention, 2009 (Hong Kong Convention) was enacted under the auspices of the IMO for the safe and environmentally sound recycling of end-of-life ships, they mentioned.
