European equities waver at open

LONDON, April 30, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - European stocks wavered at the open on Tuesday with Paris buoyed partly by brighter-than-expected French economic growth and London lifted by HSBC's shares buyback.

The British capital's benchmark FTSE 100 index advanced 0.3 percent to 8,170.01 points, not far from a record peak struck the previous day, with HSBC bank rising strongly.

In the eurozone, the Paris CAC 40 index firmed 0.1 percent to 8,073.72 points but Frankfurt's DAX eased 0.1 percent to 18,106.08.

The French economy expanded by 0.2 percent in the first quarter compared with the prior three months, according to the INSEE statistics institute, which had previously forecast zero growth.
