KHULNA, July 29, 2024 (BSS)-Around 41,000 tonnes of fish and fisheries goods worth about Taka 2,146 crore have been exported from Khulna during last 2023-24 fiscal year.
Of the fish and fisheries goods, around 16,000 tonnes of shrimp worth about Taka 1,744 crore and 25,000 tonnes of white fish and fisheries goods worth over Taka 400 crore was exported, Joydeb Paul, District Fisheries Officer (DFO), disclosed it today during a view exchange meeting with journalists at the deputy commissioner's conference room in the city ahead of National Fisheries Week-2024 campaign, scheduled to begin on July 30.
In the FY 2022-23, the BFFEA has been exported around 45 tonnes of fish and fisheries goods worth around Taka 2,823 crore, he added.
Terming the coastal district Khulna is now producing huge fish and fisheries goods and it has already declared a surplus district of its production, the DFO said, fish farmers can produce huge Hilsa, crab, kuchia and telapia fish side by side 'Galda' and 'Tiger'(Bagda) shrimp.
He, however, said a total of 1.25 lakh tonnes of fish and fisheries goods have been produced against 57,000 tonnes of demand for 26 lakh people in Khulna.
With Deputy Commissioner Khondokar Yasir Arefin in the chair, the meeting was addressed, among others, by Additional Deputy Commissioner (general) Md Nazmul Hussain Khan and Deputy Chief Principal Information Officer of the Press Information Department M Zaved Iqbal.
Khondokar Yasir Arefin said the farmers should take necessary steps about fish farming to protect natural fish fries side by side other crops farming.
The DC also urged the journalists for lunching huge campaign ahead of the National Fisheries Week-2024.
With the theme, 'Bhorbo Mache Moder Desh, Gorbo Smart Bangladesh', the department of fisheries will organize massive campaign in Khulna through banner, festoons and announcement on July 30.
On July 31, the programme will begin by releasing fish fries at the pond of Shaheed Hadis Park in the morning.
A colourful rally will also be brought out in the city while a discussion meeting will also be held at the DC's conference room.
