DHAKA, Oct 6, 2024 (BSS) - Finance and commerce adviser Salehuddin Ahmed
today said the role of country's leather industry is crucial for
diversification of trade as there are huge possibilities and potential in the
sector to discover.
"Along with the possibilities, the sector has some problems too. We have
discussed with the businessman about the problems and possibilities of
leathers goods and footwear industry," said Salehuddin Ahmed.
The adviser was briefing journalists after holding a views exchange meeting
with Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leathergoods and Footwear Exporters'
Association (BFLLFEA) and Bangladesh Tanners Association (BTA) at finance
ministry's conference room this noon.
Discussion also took place on the surroundings of the tanneries, finance as
well as addressing the issues related to certification of institutions for
importing goods abroad, the adviser said, adding, "The tanneries have been
shifted to Savar after discussing with the businessman".
Referring to the leather industry as a completely native, he said that all of
its raw materials are domestic whereas for ready-made garment sector, cotton
and other raw materials need to be imported from abroad.
"The leather industry has a linkup with the fisheries and livestock sector.
We will encourage it", Salehuddin added.
Industry secretary Zakia Sultana, Environment secretary Dr Farhina Ahmed,
commerce ministry additional secretary Navid Safiullah, BFLLFEA president
Shahin Ahmed and BTA president Mohiuddin Ahmed Mahin were present among
others, in the meeting.
