Stocks witness lower after Durga Puja holiday

DHAKA, Oct 14, 2024 (BSS) - Stocks today witnessed fall as the investors were on a selling spree, especially on major sectors.

The prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) is decreased by 48.51 points, settling at 5,373.54. The blue-chip index, DS30, which comprises 30 prominent companies, saw a decline of 15.47 points to close at 1,969.52 while the DSES index, representing Shariah-based companies, fell by 14.29 points to 1,191.57.

This decline contrasts sharply with last Wednesday's closing session, where share prices and all indices showed gains across the board before the four-day holiday for Durga Puja.

Turnover, a crucial indicator of the market, slumped to Taka 3507.33 million, which was Taka 3766.09 million in the previous session.

Losers took a modest lead over the gainers as out of 396 issues traded, 225 ended lower, 119 closed higher and 52 issues remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.

CAPITECGBF was the day's best performer, posting a gain of 10 per cent while RSRMSTEEL was the worst loser, losing 9.09 per cent.

The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also closed lower, with its All Share Price Index (CASPI) losing 40.55 points to settle at 15094.80 and the Selective Categories Index (CSCX) fell by 24.19 points, closing at 9168.20.

The port city bourse traded 1.41 million shares and mutual fund units, with a turnover volume of Tk 93.91 million.
