DHAKA, Nov 14, 2024(BSS) - Shipping Adviser Brig General (Retd) M Sakhawat Hossain today inaugurated a newly built cargo vehicle terminal (CVT) at Benapole Land Port in Jashore district.
"A huge number of trucks carrying Indian imports will be stationed at the CVT at a time alongside Bangladeshi trucks loaded with export goods bound for India," he said this while inaugurating the terminal.
The adviser said a major portion of our by-road export-import business is run through the Benapole Land Port but the Indian goods laden trucks used to create traffic jams on the road as there was no cargo terminal in the port.
On an average, 500 to 600 Indian goods laden trucks entered into Benapole and 450 to 500 goods laden trucks entered into India from Bangladesh, Sakhawat said, adding that the normal activities of the port were badly hampered due to the traffic congestion and mismanagement in the port.
The efficiency of the port would be increased a lot through the inauguration of the port and the turnover time of the transports would be reduced drastically, he said, adding that the earnings of the port would also be increased significantly through the implementation of the project.
The adviser later joined a view exchange meeting with the officials and employees of the port and laid emphasis on enhancing the service standard of the international passengers, reduction of traffic congestion from the road, construction of a new warehouse shade, gear up the security of the port and equipment handling by own management system.
The new CVT was constructed on 41 acres of land at a cost of Taka 329.20 crore where more than 1500 goods laden trucks could be parked. There is a parking yard, internal roads, cargo building for performing duties of all agencies, port service building for the users, a modern fire fighting unit and setting up of CCTV, modern wash block, setting up of a weight machine with the capacity of 100 tonnes and modern drainage system.
Additional Secretary to the Shipping Ministry Deloara Begum, Chairman of Bangladesh Land Port Authorities Mohammad Manjarul Mannan and senior officials of the port and district were present.
