THAKURGAON, Nov 15, 2024 (BSS)- Under the supervision of the district administration a farmers’ market has been launched here today to reach essential commodities particularly kitchen items to consumers at fair price.
The market brings the producers and buyers under same umbrella ensuring farmers to get fair price of their products and consumers to buy their commodities within their affordability.
Essential items such as spices, vegetables, fishes and meats are being sold in the market at fair price, locals said.
Deputy Commissioner Ishrat Farzana inaugurated the market this morning which will run business on Friday and Saturday every week.
Steps would be taken for keeping the market open for seven days a week depending on the demand of local people, organizers said.
To avoid environmental pollution, authorities have taken measures for use of the bio-degradable eco-friendly jute and fibre bags instead of polythene.
A stall called 'Humanity Bargaining' has been opened in the market for the extreme poor people. People voluntarily donate various kitchen items to the shop which later are distributed among needy people free of cost.
Bangladesh Army and leaders of anti discrimination student movement have introduced Bazar Pahara to monitor the market.
Buyers are happy as there is no middleman in the market, allowing them to purchase commodities directly from the farmers.
Buyer Rubina Akhtar said, she bought one kg ginger at Taka 120, one kg chickpea at Taka 50 and coriander leaves at Taka 30. However, Alamgir of Shah Para, Sabrina of Sarkar Para said, prices of some vegetables are same as in the regular markets.
Shahadat, a vegetable farmer from Nargun has come to the market for selling his produce. He said, farmers’ market is seemed to be profitable as there is no toll or fee on their business.
Seller Mozammel said, on the first day we could sell his items quickly because demand was higher than the supply. The market would surely draw more sellers and buyers when more people would know about the market, he said.
Farzana, an activist of anti-discrimination student movement said, this initiative has been taken to break the conventional price syndicates and help the common people to purchase their daily essentials directly from the farmers at relatively low price.
Rakibul Alam, a student of the medical wing of anti-discrimination student movement said, they have opened a stall of shopping bag to encourage people to use bags made of sticky and decomposable corn fibre to keep the environment clean.
Captain Faiz of Thakurgaon army camp said the market is getting crowded as the day was progressing. Army welcomed this initiative and is ready to provide all assistance to civil administration to make the market viable.
