Successful development of SEZ will begin new horizon of investment: BEZA chief

DHAKA, Nov 20, 2024 (BSS) - BEZA Executive Chairman (Senior Secretary) Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun today said successful implementation of the development of national Special Economic Zone (SEZ) will begin new horizon of investment in the country.

 “We are building economic zones with the goal of integrated planned industrialization. The economic zones will serve as a model for safe and sustainable development, employment and environmental protection for the next generation,” said the chairman of Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA).

Ashik Mahmud said this while presiding over a workshop on ‘Regional Environmental and Social Assessment (RESA)’ at a city hotel.

Lamiya Morshed, Principal Coordinator (SDG) of the Chief Adviser’s Office, and ASM Humayun Kabir, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, attended the workshop as special guests.

Saleh Ahmed, Executive Member (Planning and Development) of BEZA and Syad Md Nurul Basir, Chairman of the National Housing Authority, among others, spoke on the occasion.     

BEZA chairman said that the evaluation report shows that the cooperation of many institutions of the government is needed to develop the national Special Economic Zone as a functional industrial zone.

He urged all to fulfill their respective responsibilities to develop the economic zones.

Lamiya Morshed said national Special Economic Zones are being established under BEZA, which are aligned with various goals of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“The development of the national Special Economic Zones will create an opportunity to implement the 11 SDG goals,” she added.
