DHAKA, Nov 28, 2024 (BSS) -Australia has reframed its commitment to maintaining duty-free and quota-free access for Bangladeshi products even after the country's graduation from the Least Developed Country (LDC) status in 2026.
It was stated at the third meeting of the Joint Working Group, established under the Trade and Investment Framework Arrangement (TIFA) signed between Bangladesh and Australia, held on Tuesday at Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs in Canberra, said a press release received here today.
During the meeting, Bangladesh invited Australia to invest in its burgeoning information technology sector, while the Australian side showed a positive attitude towards importing summer fruits from Bangladesh.
Both sides have expressed keen interest in enhancing mutual cooperation in various sectors, including trade policy, agriculture, education, investment, garment industries, energy, and information technology.
The meeting highlighted Australia's interest in the use of Bangladeshi wool and cotton in its garment industry.
Additionally, Bangladesh sought Australia's assistance in technical education and skills development.
The prospect of direct flights between the two nations was also discussed, with both sides expressing optimism about future developments.
The Bangladeshi delegation was led by Commerce ministry's Additional Secretary Md Abdur Rahim Khan, while Sarah Storey, First Assistant Secretary at Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs, headed the Australian delegation.
Deputy Secretary for Trade and Investment at Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade George Mina also attended the session.
The fourth meeting of the Joint Working Group is scheduled to take place in Dhaka at the same time next year.
