DHAKA, Feb 3, 2025 (BSS): Bangladesh is benefiting from the hard-earned remittances sent by expatriates through legal channels, speakers said at an orientation meeting at the Bangladesh High Commission in Sydney, Australia.

The event, jointly organized by the Bangladesh High Commission and the Bangladesh Consulate General in Sydney on Friday (Jan 31), aimed to raise awareness to promote legal remittance sending to the country.

The Bangladesh government is providing a 2.5% cash incentive on remittances to recognize expatriates' contributions, they said.

Charge d'Affaires of Bangladesh High Commission in Canberra, Dr. Dewan M Shahriar Feroz, attended as the chief guest, while Bangladesh Consul General in Sydney, M Sakhawat Hossen, presided over the meeting.

Dr. Dewan M Shahriar said Bangladesh government is working for the welfare of the expatriates, adding "the foreign exchange which is being hardly earned by the expatriates, is contributing significantly to the economy of the country."
At the meeting, M Salahuddin, Counselor of the Labour Welfare Wing, encouraged expatriates to invest in Wage Earners' Development Bonds and presented various government initiatives for their welfare, according to a Bangladesh High Commission press release received today.

Expatriates in attendance praised the government's development efforts, while Sydney-based expatriate journalists and community leaders also participated in the discussion.
