DHAKA, July 24, 2022 (BSS) - The Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD) today
underscored the need for taking adequate measures to tackle the economic
challenge.
"Bangladesh is in medium term crisis. Current measures are inadequate. So,
measures should be both short and medium term in nature," said executive
director of the CPD Dr Fahmida Khatun.
She made this comment at a discussion titled 'Recent Economic Challenge: How
risky it is?' held at its office in the city's Dhanmondi.
The CPD executive director said the government should pay more attention to
reform of institutionalization, revenue collection and loan default to deal
with economic challenges.
Fahmida Khatun said that the current crisis is not short-term but medium-
term. If this trend continues the country will go towards a long-term crisis,
she added.
Urging the government to take long-term measures to tackle the economic
crisis, the CPD executive director said, "Although the position of Bangladesh
is somewhat better, there is a need to be cautious. The government needs to
take long-term measures."
The CPD executive director said the crisis can be eased if short to medium-
term planning is done. "Current measures taken by the government are mostly
short-term in nature. At present, macro stability should be prioritized in
the medium-term."
Research director of CPD Dr Khondaker Golam Moazzem conducted the discussion
where former advisor of the caretaker government AB Mirza Azizul Islam, Power
and Participation Research Center executive chairman Hossain Zillur Rahman,
Former Bangladesh Bank governor Salehuddin Ahmed, Professor M Tamim and CPD
fellow Professor Mostafizur Rahman also spoke on the occasion.
