CHATTOGRAM, Dec 16, 2022 (BSS) - The great Victory Day was celebrated in the port city as elsewhere in the district in a befitting manner today, paying rich tributes to the martyrs for their supreme sacrifice during the Liberation War.
To mark the day, different organizations including Chattogram City Corporation, divisional and district administrations, Chattogram Metropolitan Police, political, socio-cultural, voluntary, professional and trade organisations placed wreaths at temporary Shaheed Minar of Chattogram Municipal Model School and College early in the morning.
Some of the people who came to Shaheed Minar held banners, some held placards, and some took the red and green flag of independent Bangladesh. It was as if everyone had met in one estuary, at Shaheed Minar. First, the Victory Day celebrations began with an armed salute by a smart contingent of the city police.
Marking the day, Chattogram district administration has taken up a three-day special programme in the city from December 15 to 17.
Hundreds of jubilant people, including officials and employees and political activists, participated in the victory procession here.
Apart from the government, various political parties, its front organisations, socio-cultural and professional bodies organised rallies, discussions, cultural functions and milad mahfils marking the day.
The programmes include placing wreaths at Shaheed Minar at one minute past 12 midnight, hoisting of the national flag atop all buildings including private and public establishments at dawn, illumination and decoration of road islands, roadsides and educational institutions.
The day's programme was heralded with a 21-gunfire from the top the court hill at 12:01 am followed by playing of whistles simultaneously from the rail, steamer and vessel engines.
Mayor Reazaul Karim Chowdhury placed wreaths at temporally set up central Shaheed Minar early today followed by Divisional Commissioner of Chattogram Asharf Uddin, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Chattogram range, Anwar Hossain, Deputy Commissioner of Chattogram, Fakruzzaman, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Krisnopada Roy and hundreds of socio-cultural organisations placed wreaths this morning.
Chattogram Press Club and Chattogram Union of Journalists placed wreaths at the portrait of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in front of Chattogram Press club premises.
District administration arranged a detailed programme to celebrate the day which included placing wreaths at Shaheed Minar, hoisting the national flag atop all government, autonomous, and semi-government offices.
Doa mahfil and special prayers at mosques, temples, churches and other places of worship were arranged seeking peace and progress of the country.
Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) has taken up similar programmes including placing wreaths at Shaheed Minar and march-past at city’s parade ground and reception to the Freedom Fighters.
Chattogram city, north and south districts units of Awami League and its different front organizations organized daylong programmes in observance of the day.
Improved diets were served to inmates of hospitals, jails, Shishu Sadan, vagabond centres, orphanages and shelter homes for the elderly people.
Various educational institutions including Chattogram University, Chattogram University of Engineering and Technology, Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU), University of Science and Technology Chattogram, (USTC), Premier University and Chattogram College Chattogram also celebrated the victory day through elaborate programmes.
