Veteran AL leader FF Elias Ahmed no more

RANGPUR, Jan 29, 2023 (BSS) - Veteran Awami League (AL) leader and heroic
freedom fighter (FF) Advocate Elias Ahmed died at Rangpur Medical College
Hospital while undergoing treatment at 4 am today.
 
He was 72.
 
He is survived by two sons, host of relatives, admirers and fellow heroic
freedom fighters, leaders and workers of Awami League and its associate
bodies and well-wishers.
 
The news of his death cast a pall of gloom in the political, sociocultural
and professional and every arena of Rangpur district and greater Rangpur
region as a whole.
 
Party and family sources said the first Namaz-E-Janaza of Advocate Elias
Ahmed was held at Rangpur Judge Court premises at 11:30 am today.

The second Namaj-E-Janaza was held at Rangpur District Awami League office
premises in Betpotti area of the city at 12:30 this noon.
 
A smart contingent of police forces will give a guard of honour and bugle
play the last post before his last Namaz-E-Janaza at Koilash Ranjan Shalbon
Mistripara Eidgah ground after the Johr prayers today.
 
Later, his body will be buried at the nearby Shalbon Mistripara Graveyard
with full state honour.
 
Advocate Elias Ahmed got involved in the politics of Bangladesh Chhatra
League during his student life in 1967.

He was elected as the Vice-president of Rangpur College Students' Union
during the mass upsurge.

As a leader of Rangpur Sub-divisional unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League,
Advocate Elias Ahmed first hoisted the Bangladesh Independence Flag in front
of the Deputy Commissioner's office on March 23, 1971.
 
Later, he directly participated in the Great War of Liberation.
 
After the independence, Advocate Elias Ahmed accepted the responsibility of
the General Secretary of Rangpur Jubo League when the organization was formed
under leadership of Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni.
 
During the post 1975 periods, he was implicated to various political cases
and subjected to torture.
 
He assumed the responsibility of the President of the District Jubo League
and also served as the Youth Affairs Secretary of the District Awami League.
 
After Sheikh Hasina returned to the country on May 17, 1981 and took charge
of the party, Advocate Elias Ahmed accepted the responsibility of the General
Secretary of District Awami League in 1984 and held this responsibility for
about 20 years
 
After 2011, he held the responsibilities of the Vice-president of the
District Awami League and later as its Senior Vice-president.
