National Voters’ Day celebrated in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, MAR 02, 2023(BSS)-The National Voters’ Day-2023 was celebrated in the district as elsewhere in the country today with a call to encourage the common people to cast their votes to keep democracy strong.

This year’s theme of the day was ‘Voter hobo Niyom mene, vote dibo jogyojone’ translated in English as ‘I will be a voter according to the rules, I will vote for those who are eligible’.

Marking the day successful, the district election office chalked out elaborate programmes in association with the district administration.

In the morning at 10am, a grand rally led by Whip of the Jatiya Sangshad Mahabub Ara Begum Gini was brought out from the premises of District Election Office here and ended in front of the District Collectorate Building after parading the main roads of the town

Later, a discussion was also held at the conference room of deputy commissioner (DC) here with DC Oliur Rahman in the chair.

Whip of the Jatiya Sangshad Mahabub Ara Begum Gini addressed the meeting as chief guest and superintendent of police (SP) Kamal Hossain, mayor of Gaibandha Municipality Matlubur Rahman spoke at the meeting as the special guests.

The meeting was also addressed, among others, by ADC (General) Sushanta Kumer Mahato and district election officer (DEO) Abdul Mottalib.

The speakers in their speeches said that exercising the voting rights by a voter is a constitutional responsibility as the elected representatives work in building the nation.

Whip Gini said the day would make the young people aware about their voting rights as well as including themselves in voters roll and create awareness among the people to exercise their voting rights.

If the day is celebrated properly at the grassroots level, it will create a positive impact on the democratic culture of the country, she added.
Terming the celebration of the day is a time-befitting decision of the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the whip urged all concerned to take necessary steps so that no eligible citizen of the country remains out of the voters list anyway.

DC Oliur Rahman said emphasis should be given to increase the attendance of the voters in all polls through creating awareness among them so that they could elect their choice-able candidates to lead the nation towards desired development.
DEO Abdul Mottalib said the Election Commission celebrated the day for the first time on March 1, 2019 but later, the government changed the date to March 02 and thanked all for participating the programmes.

Later, the chief guest distributed smart cards to a number of new voters marking the day.

A large number of people including government officials, invited persons, teachers, students and journalists took part in the programme.
