KHULNA, March 7, 2023 (BSS) - The historic March 7 was observed in the district today as elsewhere across the country in a befitting manner.
On this day in 1971, the great leader Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman delivered his epoch-making speech of independence at the Race Course Maidan, now Suhrawardy Uddan, in Dhaka.
Khulna District Administration, Khulna City and District Unit Awami League (AL), its associate bodies and many other organisations took day-long programmes to mark the day.
Celebration of the day has attained special significance following inclusion of the historic March 7 speech of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the 'Memory of World International Register' as a documentary heritage by UNESCO in 2017.
The day began with hoisting of the National and Party flags atop the AL
office at around 7:00 am. Leaders and activists of AL and its front
organisations placed wreaths on the portrait of the Father of the Nation
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
An 'Ananda Shobhayatra', with the participation of leaders and workers of AL and its associate bodies were brought out by the city AL office and wreaths were placed at the Mural of Bangabandhu on Khulna deputy commissioner's (DC) office premises.
A discussion was held at the party office with city unit AL president and
mayor of Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Talukder Abdul Khaleque in the chair.
Among others, AL leaders M D A Babul Rana, freedom fighter Nur Islam Bandh, Jamal Uddin Bachu, advocate Sultana Rahman Shilpi and Mahbub Alam Sohag, spoke on the occasion.
The historic speech of Bangabandhu has been played on loudspeakers at all wards, thana and upazila AL offices.
A video documentary on the life sketch of Bangabandhu has been screened at important public places in the city.
Meanwhile, Freedom Fighters, Khulna District Administration, Khulna
Metropolitan Police, Khulna Range DIG of Police and different organizations paid tributes at the monument of Bangabandhu on Khulna DC office premises.
Chaired by Deputy Commissioner Khondokar Yasir Arefin, district administration organised a discussion at the DC's conference room.
KCC Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque addressed the meeting as the chief guest while superintendent of Police Mahbub Hossain and Freedom Fighter Prof Alamgir Hossain, addressed as special guests.
The District Shilpakala Academy organised a discussion meeting and cultural programme in celebration of the historic day. Khulna District Shishu Academy organised competition of Bangabandhu's Historical Speech among children and prize distribution ceremony.
A total of 1,920 children delivered Bangabandhu's 7 March historical speech simultaneously at the District Stadium.
Besides, Khulna University (KU), Khulna University of Engineering and Technology
(KUET), Khulna Agricultural University (KAU), Educational Institutions, Mongla Port Authority (MPA), West Zone Power Company Ltd, Khulna Press Club, Khulna Union of Journalists (KUJ) and different socio-cultural organisations also observed similar programmes marking the day.
