Community support indispensable to combat violence against women, children

RAJSHAHI, Aug 17, 2023 (BSS)-Ensuring women and children rights can be the best way of establishing an equity-based society through eradicating violence and repression against them.
 
Enhancing wide-ranging social awareness among the community people, especially the parents and teachers, is very important for prevention of child marriage and dowry for substantial and sustainable reduction of violence against women.
 
The views were expressed by the government officials, development activists and other watchdogs at a dialogue on the importance of freeing the society from all sorts of violence and cruelty against the women and the children.
 
Brac Urban Development Programme (UDP) hosted the dialogue with the government officials related to violence against women and children, child marriage reporting and legal measures at its office here today.

Deputy Director of the Department of Women Affairs Sobnam Shirin, Police Inspector Rezaul Karim and Ward Councilors of Rajshahi City Corporation Sultana Ahmed Sagorika and Jebun Nessa addressed the meeting as focal persons.

With UDP Regional Manager Farjana Parveen in the chair, the meeting was addressed, among others, by Regional Manager of Brac Mehedia Hassan and Operational Manager Shamim Ahsan.

The discussants laid emphasis on concerted efforts of all government and non-government entities concerned for establishing rights of women and children everywhere in the society.
 
With a changed social mindset, people should be educated for better and smooth access to all spheres of the development.
The meeting was told that the government under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been working relentlessly for the women development for the overall uplift of the country.
 
The government has adopted diversified programmes to enable womenfolk to contribute to take the nation forward spontaneously.
 
The discussants unanimously termed the present government as women-friendly and mentioned that the government has attached top priority on the women development.
 
Sobnam Shirin put emphasis on both men-women equal participation for achieving the SDGs by 2030 together with building Smart Bangladesh envisioned by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina by 2041.
 
She called for taking a concerted effort of all the government and non-government organizations concerned for freeing the women and children from all sorts of violence and repression.
 
Utmost emphasis should be given on physical and mental development of the children, she added.
