NATORE, Sept 8, 2023 (BSS) - The International Literacy Day-2023 was observed today in the district as elsewhere in the country in a befitting manner.
This year's theme of the day is 'Promoting Literacy for a World in Transition: Building the Foundation for Sustainable and Peaceful Societies'.
The 8th of September was proclaimed as International Literacy Day by the UNESCO in 1966 to remind the international community of the importance of literacy for individuals, communities and societies, and the need for intensified efforts towards more literate societies.
On the occasion, a colourful rally was brought out from the collectorate building premises that paraded the important streets and ended deputy commissioner's office this morning.
After the rally, a discussion was held at the conference room of Deputy Commissioner (DC) office. DC Abu Naser Bhuiyan presided over the discussion this morning.
Emdadul Haque, assistant director of the Non-formal Education Bureau of the district, presented the main article in the discussion.
The speakers said that Bangladesh is moving forward on the path of development and prosperity. The government is working to improve the quality of livelihood of about 24 percent of the population of the country, who are out of literacy, by providing them with literacy.
District Primary Education Officer Md Golam Nabi, President of Natore Press Club Faraji Ahmad Rafiq Baban, Executive Director of non-government organization 'Alo's Shamima Laiju Neela, Educationist Subidh Kumar Maitra, among others, spoke at the programme.
Heads of various educational institutions of the district, representatives of non-government organizations, teachers and students of various academic institutions, among others, were present.
