JOYPURHAT, Sept 14, 2023 (BSS) - A court here today awarded death penalty to a man for burning a woman to death in Awalgari village under Akkelpur upazila of the district in 2009.

Judge of the Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-2, Md. Abbas Uddin pronounced the verdict this afternoon.

The court also fined him Taka 50,000.

The convict is Sajadul Islam,38, son of Md. Sahabul Islam, resident of Awalgari village of Akkelpur upazila

According to the detail of the case, on February 20, 2009, victim Rupali, 16, daughter of Abdul Jalil of area, went missing after going out of the house late at night. The next morning, police recovered her burnt body on the bank of the Tulshi Gonga River in the area.

Abdul Jalil, the father of the victim, filed a case with Akkelpur Police Station, naming five people as the accused on May 5, 2009.

Later, police submitted charge-sheet on August 16, 2011.

After examining witnesses, the court found convict guilty and handed down the punishment today.

Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate Nripendranath Mandal confirmed the matter.
