RAJSHAHI, Oct 14, 2023 (BSS)- Experts at a participatory discussion here today unequivocally called for giving utmost emphasis on following precise standards in every spheres of life for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In order to achieve these goals, the cooperation of various public and private partners, the use of all the available tools, including the conformity assessment and international standards, is urgently required.
In the present context, unhygienic, spurious and substandard consumer products and the food in particular is being adjudged as the breeding point of various non-infectious diseases like cancer, stroke, cardiac arrest and kidney ailments.
Regional Office of Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institutions (BSTI) organised the discussion at its office conference hall in observance of the World Standard Day-2023.
The theme for this year's Day is “Shared Vision for a Better World: Incorporating Sustainable Development Goal for Good Health and Well-Being.”
Additional Commissioner of Rajshahi division Jasim Uddin Haider addressed the meeting as chief guest while BSTI Deputy Director Engineer Saiful Islam was in the chair.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi Sarker Asim Kumar, President of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Masudur Rahman and Additional Director of Department of Narcotics Control Fazlur Rahman also spoke on the occasion.
Prof Shafiul Islam from the Department of Public Administration at Rajshahi University illustrated the significance of the day besides the importance of maintaining quality and best handling practices in the consumer products in his multimedia presentation.
Disseminating his expertise on the theme he highlighted the aspects of ensuring quality and standard everywhere in civic life.
Chief Guest Jasim Uddin Haider suggested improving the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of their operations, complying with legislative and regulatory requirements, safeguarding health and protecting the environment.
He called upon the BSTI to intensify its market inspection and monitoring activities to tackle adulteration and stop the marketing of fake and substandard products.
Jasim Uddin Haider said emphasis has been placed on eliminating social imbalances, sustainable economic development and limiting the scale of climate change in order to achieve the SDGs.
He attributed that the present government under the dynamic and visionary leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been implementing gigantic development projects for achieving the SDGs within the stipulated time.
