RANGPUR, Oct 18, 2023 (BSS) - Vice-chancellor of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) Professor Dr. Md. Hasibur Rashid today said Sheikh Russell is a symbol of building a brighter life for neglected, backward and deprived children.
"On August 15, 1975, child Russell did not escape from the brutality of the killers. "If he were alive today, he would have been at the forefront of the struggle to advance Bangladesh towards prosperity as a talented person," he said.
He was addressing a discussion arranged in celebration of Sheikh Russell Day-2023 marking the 60th birthday of Sheikh Russel, the youngest son Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the university campus as the chief guest.
Earlier, Professor Rashid inaugurated the daylong celebration programs by leading a colorful 'Shovayatra' from the university's administrative building to Sheikh Russell Square on the campus.
Pro Vice-chancellor Professor Dr. Sarifa Salwa Dina, Treasurer Professor Dr. Mojib Uddin Ahamed and Registrar Engineer Mohammad Alamgir Chowdhury, teachers, students, officials and employees participated in the program.
Later, the Vice-chancellor, Pro Vice-chancellor and Treasurer paid tribute to the temporary portrait of Sheikh Russel installed at Sheikh Russell Square in the campus.
Professor Rashid also planted a sapling in the campus to commemorate the memory of martyr Sheikh Russel.
Professor Rashid said the new generation will learn a lot by researching little Russel's personality, humanity and ready wit and suggested teachers and students to conduct research on Sheikh Russel.
Convener of Sheikh Russel Day Celebration Committee-2023, Professor Dr. Kamlesh Chandra Roy presided over the discussion moderated by Director (In-charge) of the Office of the Student Affairs Syed Anwarul Azim.
The Pro-Vice-chancellor and Treasurer spoke as special guests.
Associate Professor of the Department of Gender and Development Studies Kuntola Chowdhury, President of BRUR unit of Chhatra League Pomel Barua and its General Secretary Mahfuzur Rahman Shamim also addressed.
Later, the chief guest distributed prizes among winners of different competitions arranged marking the day.
After the Zohr prayer, a doa mahfil followed by offering special munajats was organized at the central mosque of the university seeking divine blessings for the departed soul of Sheikh Russel and all martyrs of August 15 carnage.
