RAJSHAHI, Oct 18, 2023 (BSS) - 'Sheikh Russel Day' marking the 60th birthday
of Shaheed Sheikh Russel, the youngest son of Father of the Nation
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was observed in a befitting manner in the
city and its outskirts today.
Sheikh Russel was born on October 18 in 1964 at the historic Bangabandhu
Bhaban at Dhanmondi 32 no road in Dhaka city.
He was assassinated along with most of his family members including his
father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 15 in 1975.
To mark the birthday, Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) organised a daylong
programme including placing of wreaths on the portrait of Sheikh Russel,
releasing balloons, festoons and pigeons, birthday cake cutting, amusement
rally, discussion meeting and doa mahfil at the city bhaban.
Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, RCC Councilors and officials joined the
programmes paying rich tribute to Sheikh Russel.
Divisional and district administrations jointly organised a discussion
meeting at Shilpakala Academy auditorium paying rich tribute to Sheikh
Russel.
Divisional Commissioner Dr Dewan Muhammad Humayun Kabir addressed the
discussion as the chief guest while Additional Deputy Inspector General of
Police (IGP) Rashidul Hassan, Additional Commissioner of Rajshahi
Metropolitan Police Hemayetul Islam and Additional Superintendent of Police
Abu Saleh Muhammad Ashraful Islam spoke as special guests with Deputy
Commissioner Shamim Ahmed in the chair.
Rajshahi city unit of Bangladesh Awami League also held a discussion and doa
mahfil at its office.
To mark the day, leaders and workers of the unit paid homage by placing
floral wreaths on the portraits of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh
Mujibur Rahman, four other national leaders and Sheikh Russel.
Awami League Presidium Member AHM Khairuzzaman Liton and other local front-
ranking leaders joined the programmes.
Different other socio-cultural organisations including the associate bodies
of Awami League also observed the Sheikh Russel Day in the city in a
befitting manner.
Rajshahi University authority also celebrated the birthday of Sheikh Russel
on its campus through various programmes including placing floral wreaths,
birthday cake cutting, tree plantation and prize distribution.
Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Golam Sabbir Sattar, Pro-VCs Prof Sultan-Ul-
Islam and Prof Humayun Kabir and Registrar Prof Abdus Salam joined the
programmes.
Different educational institutionsin the city, including Rajshahi University
of Engineering and Technology, Rajshahi Medical University, Rajshahi College,
Rajshahi Medical College, also observed the day separately paying rich
tribute to Sheikh Russel.
