RANGPUR, Oct 18, 2023 (BSS) - The Sheikh Russel Day-2023 marking the 60th 
birthday of Shaheed Sheikh Russel, the youngest son of Father of the Nation 
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was celebrated in a befitting manner here 
today.
 
The district and divisional administrations, Rangpur Metropolitan Police 
(RpMP), Rangpur City Corporation, Awami League and its associate bodies and 
other organisations chalked out daylong programs to celebrate the birthday.
 
The district administration brought out a colorful rally with participation 
of officials, politicians, students, teachers, professionals, sociocultural 
activists, civil society members and common people from Zilla School to the 
Town Hall premises in the morning.
 
Later, Rangpur Divisional Commissioner Md. Habibur Rahman with Additional 
Divisional Commissioner (General) Md. Abu Jafar and high officials placed 
wreaths at the temporary portrait of Sheikh Russel installed at the Public 
Library Munch in the city.
 
Additional Commissioner of Police (Admin and Finance) of RpMP Md. Saifuzzaman 
Faruki, Additional Deputy Inspector General of Rangpur Range Police Pankaj 
Chandra Roy, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mobasswer Hasan, Superintendent of 
Police Md. Ferdous Ali Chowdhury, high officials and political leaders placed 
wreaths at the portrait of Sheikh Russel there.
 
The Divisional Commissioner released balloons with a festoon marking the day.
 
Diabetic tests and health checkups were conducted free of cost at a health 
camp arranged in the city.
 
Residents of Government Shishu Paribars and unprivileged and slum dweller 
children were taken to Entrainment Park, Children Park and Rangpur Zoo and 
'Vinnojagat' tourist spots.
 
The central programs marking celebrations of Sheikh Russel's birthday were 
screened live at the District Shilpokola Academy auditorium.
 
Later, a book exhibition on Sheikh Russel was arranged at the Government 
Public Library in the city.
 
Milad, doa mehfils and special munajats were offered at mosques and places of 
religious worship seeking divine blessings for the departed souls of Russel 
and all martyrs of August 15, 1975, including Father of the Nation 
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
 
Improved diets were served to inmates of hospitals, Rangpur Central Jail, old 
homes, child and orphanage centres, Government Shishu Paribars and vagabond 
centers.
 
The Divisional Commissioner addressed the main discussion held at the 
District Shilpokola Academy auditorium as the chief guest with Deputy 
Commissioner Mohammad Mobasswer Hasan in the chair. 
 
High officials and political leaders also spoke.
 
Later, prizes were distributed among winners of essay, drawing and 
presentation competitions organized marking the day.
 
The district and metropolitan units of Awami League and associate bodies 
celebrated "Sheikh Russel Day-2023" marking the 60th birthday of Shaheed 
Sheikh Russel through elaborate programs, including cake-cutting and 
discussions, in the city.
 
Conveners of district Awami League AKM Chhayadat Hossain Bakul, its Joint 
Conveners Joint Convener Professor Mazed Ali Babul, Convener of Metropolitan 
Awami League Dr. Md. Delwar Hossain, its Joint Convener Md. Abul Kashem, 
among others, participated in the programs.
