'Abiding by traffic rules while driving must to reduce accidents'

RANGPUR, Oct 22, 2023 (BSS) - Abiding by traffic rules while driving vehicles alongside enforcement of related laws are a must to restore order on the roads for reducing road accidents and human casualties.

Officials and experts expressed the view today at a post-rally discussion held at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner in observance of the National Road Safety Day-2023 in the city.

The district administration, Roads and Highways Department (RHD) and Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) chalked out programs including bringing out a colorful rally, releasing balloons and discussion marking the day.
 
Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mobasswer Hasan launched the observance by releasing balloons on his office premises in presence of officials, politicians, students, transport owners, drivers, helpers, and civil society members.

Presided over by Additional District Magistrate Shahnaz Begum, the Deputy Commissioner attended the discussion as the chief guest.

Superintendent of Police Md. Ferdous Ali Chowdhury spoke as a special guest.
 
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic Division) of Rangpur Metropolitan Police Menhazul Alam, Executive Engineer of RHD Md Sajedur Rahman, Divisional Deputy Director (Engineering) of Rangpur Circle of BRTA Engineer ATM Jalal Uddin and its Assistant Director Engineer Md. Faruk Alam also spoke.

Taking part in the discussion, the speakers narrated different laws enacted by the government and important steps taken at times and activities of law enforcement agencies in preventing road accidents.
 
Engineer Faruk Alam said there is no substitute to skilled drivers as most accidents are caused by reckless driving and called for stopping driving without valid documents alongside taking strict stand against those who violate the laws.
 
"Alongside raising awareness, transport owners, workers, passengers and pedestrians must be more responsible in obeying the laws to build safe roads, reduce accidents and human casualties," he said.
 
Engineer Jalal Uddin called upon drivers to stop speeding competition while driving as it would not be possible to restore order on the roads even with stringent enforcement of related laws by the law enforcement agencies alone.
 
The chief guest stressed on abiding by traffic rules alongside strict enforcement of the related laws to build safe roads and enhancing professional skill of drivers to ensure safer use of roads on the way to build a developed smart Bangladesh by 2041 next.
