GAIBANDHA, Oct 27, 2023 (BSS)- Hilsha conservation drive has been continuing
in the river of Jamuna here since October 12 at the joint initiative of
Department of Fisheries and respective upazila administration.

Office sources said a 22-day ban on Hilsha catching, selling, hoarding and
transporting has been launched on October 11 and it would continue till
November 02.

During the period, if any fisherman catches Hilsha in the river Jamuna
violating the ban, he must be convicted or fined.

Defying the ban, a number of fishermen try to catch Hilsha fishes in the
river of Jamuna here evading the concerned officials and administrations.

To bring the violators under lawful action, the department of fisheries has
continued drives in the river.

In continuation, a drive of mobile court, led by Assistant Commissioner
(Land) and Executive Magistrate Monoranjan Barmon, was conducted in the river
of Saghata upazila here on Thursday.

During the drive, 2000 meters of nets and five kilograms of hilsha fish were
seized but no fishermen was detained as sensing the presence of the mobile
court they were managed to flee keeping their nets and fish.

Later, the seized nets were burnt to ashes on the premises of upazila
administration in presence of the officials.
 
Senior Assistant Director of the Department of Fisheries Barun Chandra
Biswas, District Fisheries Officer Faysal Azam, Upazila Fisheries Officer
Emdadul Haque and members of police of Saghata thana accompanied the drive of
the mobile court.

DFO Faysal Azam told BSS that similar activities are also being conducted in
Fulchhari, Sadar and Sundarganj upazilas of the district.
