JOYPURHAT, Nov 9, 2023 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced 14 people to life term imprisonment for killing a man at Harenda village under Panchbibi upazila of the district, in 2003.

Senior Judge of the District and Sessions Judge Court  Md Noor Islam pronounced the verdict this afternoon.

The convicts are - Abdul Mannan, son of Biraj Uddin Mondal, Shonowar Hossain, Sahaj Hossain, Anwar Hossain, Delwar Hossain, Riaz Uddin alias Reaz, Ramzan Ali son of Khyber Ali, Abdul Wahab, son of Samshuddin, Farooq Hossain, Md. Dulo, son of Hatim Ali Abdul Khalek, Shahjahan, son of  Ofir Uddin, Shafiqul Islam, son of Mujibur Rahman, Anishur Rahma, son of Abdul Khalek, all are residents of Harenda village of the upazila.

The court also fined them Taka 10,000 each, in default, they will have to suffer one year more imprisonment.

According to the case details,  on the night of May 5, 2003, four brothers along with Bhola Mondal, went to cultivate the land in the field far away from their home with a power tiller, the accused hit Bhola Mondal with sharp weapons and seriously injured him.
Bhola Mondal  was admitted to Upazila Health Complex with serious injuries.  He died on the way to Joypurhat Modern District Hospital when his condition deteriorated there.

The victim's brother Dola Mondal filed a murder case on May 6, 2003 at the Panchbibi Police Station accusing 25 people.

Later, police submitted charge-sheet against 14 people.

After examining witnesses, the court found them guilty.
