BENAPOLE, Nov 16, 2023 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced three people to death sentence and two others Indian citizens to life-term imprisonment in a gold smuggling case filed with Sharsha police station in 2018.
The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Tajul Islam also sentenced four other people to 14 years imprisonment in the case.
People who were awarded death sentence by the court are Mohiuddin Tarofder, Jahidul Islam, hailed from Shikarpur village and Mujibur Rahman, an inhabitant at Narikelbaria village in Sharsha Upazila.
The people who were sentenced to life term imprisonment are Masud Rana and Shafiqul Mondol. They were the residents in 24 Parganas district in West Bengal in India.
According to the prosecution at night on August 9 in 2018 Border Guard Bangladesh held Mohiuddin with a bag at Narikelbaria. His two associates fled the scene leaving behind two bags sensing BGB presence in the area. Searching those bags BGB men found 64 gold bars weighing over 72 kilograms.
Following the seizure, BGB filed a smuggling case with Sharsha Thana accusing three named and a few unnamed people. Later, police pressed the charge sheet.
Shafi, Imran Hossain, Rubel and Kabir Hossain got 14 years jail in the verdict. They were the residents in Sharsha Upazila.
